BLOG
The conventions I attend never seem to start at the convention, they start a day or two beforehand with a lead up with gaming and wandering the area of the venue. This one is quite a special one as it’s my 30th MCM Comic Con / Expo, 25 of which are the London event. Quite an achievement in my 9 years of convention going. There are talks of a reunion in May 2027 marking my 20th year. Watch this space. 2027 is already panned out to be a big year for me as I level up to 50 years old.
I only went to the MCM London Comic Con on the Friday (22nd May 2026). Natural Six were there, so that means I was too. To confirm, if they hadn’t been there doing a meet and greet, and a live show, I wouldn’t have gone at all.
As I was saying, for me, conventions usually start a day beforehand. On this occasion, Alison came over on the Wednesday and stayed the night so we could head off to London on the Thursday morning. Jodie joined Caroline and myself for some games, while the kids were happily learning something or other at school. The game off Catan we played, the dice were totally evil and Alison won with the usual 10 points while the rest of us had 4. I will post the dice stats on an issue of 365 Days To Oblivion because it’s a must see. After that, to test the dice gods, I got a random D20 and we sat around rolling it trying to get a 20. After 10 minutes, the only time it came out was when Caroline came to the table to play and rolled it before the challenge began, and also when she dropped it on the floor and the skirting board knocked it to a 20, and that was it. The bloody thing never came out again and we rolled that die so many times.
Up early and off to London on Thursday. Caroline took the kids to school, and me and Alison were catching the train. We stayed at Deptford Green, don’t ask me why. Never again, the Travelodge room was awful. The bathroom handle, broken! The shower fan, broken! The shower head leaked over the first night, and the windows were like rice paper. Absolutely rubbish. The staff were nice at least.
Thursday has always been pre-Con day, whether meeting up with friends, or playing games, visiting the centre the convention is held at. The ExCeL has always been a favourite venue of mine ever since walking through its doors in 2007, and that was before the two extensions it’s had to make it a massive mile length centre that it is now. After dropping stuff off at the hotel it was to CoCo Ichibanya Curry House, Forbidden Planet, Orc’s Nest and The Japan Centre. Then we did the Thames boat ride and then the Emirates Air Ride which took us to ExCeL Docklands, where we had a good walk through it. I love walking the ExCeL.
Friday, the day of MCM London Comic Con. We headed off early, and when the doors opened at 10am, I had a good browse. It was nice to see my friends Tim, Selim and Nat. There’s never enough time to talk and this day was a busy one, not enough to get everything I wanted in. I did a couple of walkthrough videos and then to queue for the Natural Six meet and greet. That was definitely a buzz, love meeting the crew of my favourite Dungeons and Dragons group, and the most watched thing on my YouTube these days. Plus, I’m a Patreon so watch all of the extra content too. They’re all so friendly. The meet and greet was completely free, and they signed a poster, which will be framed as soon as possible. I had a good chat with some of the Six Pack as well, fans of the show and the amazing people who make it for us…
Alex Jordan, talked about my Natural Six lanyard badge and the 54th episode. Doug Cockle, had a chat about Yahtzee and Natural Six collections. Hollie Bennett, had a natter about older times of MCM as she was the first person I ever met when I started this whole trek and how we seem to have known people who we lost contact with over the years. Harry McEntire, I got a photo of him and his doppelganger, then chatted about Maverick being in a D&D group at school. I don’t think Harry was too impressed that I’d let Mave, a 10-year-old, watch Natural Six though. Aoife Wilson, had a quick natter about the campaign and I got a photo with her as she was the only one I’ve not had a photo with from Natural Six. Achievement unlocked. Then finally, Ben Starr. I gave him my traditional gift of Tim Tams, and then the thing he had requested on a behind the scenes episode in March 2026. He asked the Natural Six community to build him a pillar with a big die that he’d use for his big rolls and call it a Natural Benty. So I made him the pillar, gave him my first ever D20 of 15-20 years, and called it The Ancient Temple of Benty. I’ll share photos on my Oblivion blogs now he has it. I have been keeping it a bit quiet. He really liked it, so much so, he used it in the live show that evening. TOTALLY HONOURED. Thank you Ben.
After the meet and greet, I met up with Alison. We did a bit of shopping around the event. Before I walked around a certain corner, I told Alison that I wasn’t going to buy anything new to read as I’m just about to finish Death’s End (The Three Body Problem - third and final novel), and I intend to start reading The Witcher as that’s been on my list for a while, and I have the first book. Then, on turning the corner, I see Black Mirror THE COMIC. I was there, had a chat with the crew there, bought the first two volumes of The Theory and Twisted Dark, got them signed by the author, Neil Gibson, and got my photo taken with him. Absolutely amazing. I didn’t buy Black MIrror, but this comic is official and the two comics I bought lead up to it due to its dark content, and Neil was approached by the creators of Black MIrror to make a comic. I’m quite excited to start reading these. I may have a new tradition of purchases at Comic Con at this rate.
I bought some diorama pieces from Crafted Campaigns, a few new board games, and games and badges from Small Fries Games run by Nat, and it’s always a pleasure seeing her, never seems to be enough time to chat much though but I think we did quite well this time.
The Natural Six after hours show was one of the best things I’ve ever seen on stage. It should be on the MCM Comic Con YouTube, along with the rest of previous shows they’ve done there. Also, check out their main campaign story on YouTube, it’s currently at 54 episodes during the MCM May 2026 weekend, and they release a new episode every two weeks.
The Friday of MCM London Comic Con is complete, one of the best days of 2026, very VERY satisfied. I’ll be on a high for a while after this one.
Saturday, I couldn’t wait to get out of the hotel and get to King’s Cross for a McDonalds before heading home. Alison and I, well, we had a Yahtzee and Zombie Dice challenge from going to London and returning home. It was neck and neck after every game, right up until the end on the train home. On the final game of Zombie Dice, I managed to finally find some luck with the dice, after a week of crap rolls, they woke up. We got some good games in.
On getting home, it was time to give the wife and kids their presents, they were all chuffed. As much as I’m tired, after being up since 4.30am, I’m still writing this blog on Saturday evening, and prepping photos and videos to upload to the socials and my website. It’s been the best time thanks to Alison, my friends I met at the Con, Natural Six, and my wife who didn’t mind me going and looking after the kids so well in my absence. All is very well. The kids loved their insane horror gifts too. Disclaimer, my mum let me watch a lot of stuff when I was a kid that is classed 18+ and I grew up a decent bloke (in my opinion) and happy I have that past where I wasn’t blocked off from good stories. I think more than anything, it made me a stronger person and a lot more creative.
Until the next convention, which is the UK Games Expo a week after this one, bye bye for now.
