EPISODE 2 COMING SOON

RULES of Night Night D&D
Welcome to the rules I made for playing Dungeons & Dragons with my two sons, Maverick and Tobias, for a campaign I made that can be found on YouTube. Maverick, at just 10 years old, joined a D&D group at school (Year 5) and was excited to play more. His interest spiked after watching some Natural Six. Tobias, only at aged 6, he was well up for playing as well as we make stories up at bedtime in the D&D style worlds, which usually ended up really silly.
When I saw Nat (Small Fries Games) again at the May 2026 London MCM Comic Con, I bought Yuck Or Yum? and Night Night, already having the plan to turn Night Night in to a story for my children in a Dungeons & Dragons style campaign on video. I made some simple rules with all the polyhedral dice, and created a story based around all the character cards and locations. I wrote rules for all the item cards which could be obtained as the game went on. Now, how do we play this...

Like any story, you need a beginning, somewhat a chunk of middle ideas, and definitely an ending. The thing with D&D, it writes itself as you play along with the players. For our campaign, a lot of the story was written as we went, and in some cases, on the spot. That's what makes D&D fun. The best way to know what we did is to watch our campaign, we have a YouTube Playlist which is 6 episodes. The fun way though is your way. Look through the cards, create your own ideas.

The only thing I need to tell you really is how we work with the dice. The rest can be entirely up to you. As the DM (Dungeon Master) of course, you make the rules. If you see how decisions go, get them to roll a D20 and work out exactly if they do well or not. Get a 20, absolutely brilliant and all goes better than expected. Roll a 1 and it's going to go pretty badly, worse than expected. The lower the number on the D20, it's not going to go as well as if it were higher.
When a battle comes in to play, before it begins, roll for initiative. The DM rolls for the characters or monsters they control, and the players roll for themselves. Higher numbers on a roll go first, so as DM, create a list of turn order. For example, if Timmy rolls a 7, a monster controlled by the DM gets a 13, and Silly Sonia rolls a 16, the turn order would be Sonia, DM's monster, and then Timmy, and then keep going in that order until the battle is over. It's always good for the players to go first.

In a battle, roll the D20 to see which dice to roll, then that die is rolled to see how much damage you can cause to the enemy...

20: D20 roll with advantage. (roll twice, take highest number)
18-19: D20
15-17: D12
12-14: D10
8-11: D8.
4-7: D6.
2-3: D4.
1: Roll D20 and take that amount of damage.

The way the dice work are the main part of the game. For a quick example. When you roll the D20 to see which die you're going to use, if it gets 13, you'd then roll a D10. Whatever it rolls, let's say 6 appears on the die, that's how much damage the chosen enemy gets. Oh, and when you're attacking, if there's more than one enemy, specify which enemy you're attacking before rolling any dice.
These are just the rules I made, you can change them any way you like, it's not exclusive. But having 7 polyhedral dice are a must for any Dungeons & Dragons game.
Once players or enemies get to zero HP, they're down. Because it's for kids, if a player goes down but the other players win the battle, the players who went to zero can get their full health back afterwards and carry on. After battles, always get back to full health. If all players get to zero and you want to continue the story, the DM can bring another character along to save the day, bringing the players back afterwards to carry on, it's a nice thing to do. Also, if a player gets to zero and has an item that gives you HP, you can use that and continue the battle.

For each Level, randomly pull a Location card and a Creature card. Then for the players, an Item card for each player. If there are 3 or more players, once the Item deck is empty, mix all the cards up again and start a fresh deck. Only one Item card is picked for each player per Level. Players can keep the items until they have used their powers. If there are a few players and the item cards are made in to a new deck, you CAN have the same item more than once.
There are only 7 Levels to complete, you start as Level 1 with 20 HP (Health Points), and every time you level up, you get an extra 5 HP. Again, this is all up to the DM. When it comes to monsters or other characters you battle, we gave them 20 HP when at level 1, and for every level up, they get an extra 10 HP to make things harder as the story goes on.
Important rule.
If a Creature and a Location match up, the Creature gets an extra 10 HP on top of what it would have.
Make up any kind of story you like through the entire campaign. Even add extra non-player characters, even nasty ones, but try to be as nice as you can. This is a kids game after all, so depending on the mentality of the children, go with that.

The Items all have different powers, but be careful how to use them, don’t waste them, they might come in handy at the end of the campaign? The more you have later, the better. For each battle, you can use an item on every turn if you wish. A Creature also has a bonus actions and special abilities, that's all up to the DM.

All pretty straight forward. If you have any questions or think I've missed any information, please message me. The main thing though are the dice and how to use them for damage and choices.

The player sheets I made are below. Create your character name, and you can change your background to anything, you can be an Elf, Dwarf, even a Robot if you like, you don't have to be a Human Warrior.
